Upon invitation of Het Veem Theater, Komuna// Warszawa makes a performance entitled “Polish Artists Do It Cheaper”. It is the Polish ensemble’s response to the anti-immigrant rhetoric of Dutch populists and rising nativist sentiment on the one hand and to cuts in financing for culture in the Netherlands and across Europe on the other.
The performance is a remix — a cheaper, slimmed-down version of one of Dutch theatre’s most significant performances of recent years, “Roman Tragedies” by Ivo van Hove of Toneelgroep Amsterdam. Instead of the original six hours, the show will take less than an hour. In order to answer the question how to attract the audience Komuna // Warszawa brings in public from Warsaw. It will give an opportunity to discuss the issue of an audience attendence in an ‘imported’ environment.
This event is taking place in the context of Outside the Box – a one-year research project studying and experimenting with the living conditions and habitats of art spaces.
The six participating art spaces of the Outside the Box project are: Kanuti Gildi SAAL Tallinn, Forum Freies Theater Düsseldorf, zeitraumexit Mannheim, Grand Theatre Groningen, Komuna // Warszawa and Het Veem Theater.
Outside the Box is a research project corproduced by zeitraumexit (Mannheim), FFT Düsseldorf, Grand Theatre Groningen, Het Veem Theater (Amsterdam), Kanuti Gildi SAAL (Tallinn), Komuna // Warzawa (Warsaw) and the Institute for Applied Theater Studies (Giessen). The project is funded by the German Federal Cultural Foundation, the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research, and Art, the Baden-Württemberg Stiftung, and the city of Mannheim. It is presented by tanz – Zeitschrift für Ballet, Tanz und Performance and theater heute.
