about us
Komuna Warszawa is one of the best-known Polish independent theaters, recognizable in Poland and around the world. Based in Warsaw in former primary school (from 2019) its goal is to provide the audience with up to date performances, experimental musical acts, visual art exhibitions and social, inclusive program. With ten art studios based in former school classes, Komuna is one of the main residency spaces for performing arts in Poland and this part of Europe.
For over 30 years, Komuna’s main field of activity were performing arts, seen as an open place where various cultural disciplines intertwine. Komuna Warszawa started in 1989 as a politically engaged, anarchist community of social action. Currently, it operates as an innovative format of a social cultural institution – a non-governmental organization with the constant support of the city of Warsaw and the venue that is a home to many independent artistic initiatives.
Komuna’s program includes contemporary dance, performance, music, theatre, film and urban activism.
Komuna Warszawa carries out its mission in four main streams of activity: a production house, a performative residency center, a presentation stage, and a hub for urban initiatives.
Komuna Warszawa’s productions have been shown in the most important performing arts centers in Poland and abroad, e.g.: HAU Berlin, La Mama in New York, 104Centquatre in Paris, Kammerspiele in Munich, Hellerau Dresden as well as at festivals in Edinburgh, Munich, Tbilisi, Kiev, Tehran and Santiago de Chile.
Komuna Warszawa collaborated, among others, with Tim Etchells, Gosia Wdowik, Markus Öhrn, Rabih Mroué, Anna Smolar, Cezary Tomaszewski, Marta Ziółek, Weronika Szczawińska, Wojtek Ziemilski.
Komuna Warszawa co-organizes and hosts Warsaw’s most important interdisciplinary art festivals: Warsaw Autumn, Avant Art, Ephemera, Generation After Showcase and Ciało/Umysł.
For four years, Komuna’s venue is the building of a former primary school in the center of Warsaw with a performance hall, a garden, a courtyard with a summer stage, as well as 10 residential rooms with technical facilities. This creates unique possibility to organize many artistic events at the same time and to plan long-term, organic artistic work.
