War. The Best Of, dir. Agnieszka Jakimiak

We have heard many war songs. Most were not about war at all but about peace. We listened to the Beatles and Beethoven, Edwin Starr, Joanna Newsom, Bajm, Elvis Presley and Elvis Costello, The Clash, Black Sabbath, Kate Bush, King Crimson, Elton John, Rage Against the Machine, U2 and Dezerter. We listened to songs protesting the Vietnam war, the Iraq war, the Second World War. We had known them before, they had been played ad nauseam on the radio, tv, and on the internet, to the point where we grew numb to them. 90% of the songs we like are those that he had heard before, according to the Mic magazine. “Musical repetition gets us mentally imagining or singing through the bit we expect to come next,” says Elizabeth Hellmuth Margulis, the writer of On Repeat: How Music Plays the Mind in a Mic interview. “A sense of shared subjectivity with the music can arise.” But just because familiar songs feel close to us, does it mean that we know them? Does the power of memory and its lack of self-reflection not make everything sound the same? The songs written in protest against war, do they remain anti-war songs? Do we know what we listen to?
