About us

Komuna Warszawa Theatre is one of the most important independent performing arts centers in Poland. We operate under the pioneering formula of a social cultural institution. We focus on supporting artistic activities that cross genre boundaries, explore new possibilities within their disciplines, innovative forms that combine the worlds of dance, performance, theater, music, visual arts and architecture.
We carry out our mission as a production house, a presentation stage, a performance residency center and an urban action program.

Production house and presentation stage

Working with invited curators, Komuna Warszawa creates thematic cycles of performance works that are significant for the development and integration of the cultural community [RE// MIX (2013-2016), Mikro Teatr (2016-2017), Before the War, War, After the War(2016-2018)]. It also runs a venue for works by both mainstream artists and rising stars of the Polish theater, dance and performance scene. Komuna Warszawa is also a space for presenting the achievements of artists from various fields. Many of the performances realized on Komuna Warszawa’s stage, such as “Cezary Goes to War” (dir. C, Tomaszewski), “Do Yourself” (dir. M. Ziółek) or “RE//MIX Paradise Now?” (dir. G. Laszuk) became festival hits and won many awards. [see under SHOWS].
Komuna Warszawa is also a venue for presentations. In cooperation with partners, it hosts, among others: Body/Mind Festival, Warsaw Autumn, Avant Art Festival, Ephemera Festival, Summer Music Stage concert series or Docs Against Gravity outdoor cinema screenings.

One of the more renowned Polish independent theaters of the avant-garde movement

Komuna Warszawa thirty-odd years ago operated as Komuna Otwock. It was founded in 1989 in a town near Warsaw by a group of friends who shared similar values and a belief that art can change the world.
In 2010 it changed its name to Komuna Warszawa, as only a few people remained from the former collective, and in fact the theater was already operating in the capital. Basing its productions on original texts, it reached for political and social themes, constantly searching for new forms and means of expression, eagerly using video installations, dance and music played live. Komuna’s productions have been successfully presented in many major cultural centers and festivals, including HAU In Berlin, La Mama in New York, 104Centquatre Paris, SPIELART in Munich, euro-scene in Leipzig, Fringe in Edinburgh, Golden Mask in Moscow, as well as in Tbilisi, Kyiv, Tehran, and many cities in the country.
