“You’re standing with your back to me, with your back to the audience. I can’t see your face. I can’t see your eyes. I don’t know if your eyebrows are raised or if the corners of your mouth are turned down. I don’t know what you’re thinking; I don’t know what you’re expecting. I’d like to ask you for something.”
Through choreography, “Your Majesty” explores the theme of expectations and negotiation as communication strategies used in both the public and private spheres, on stage and off. In the performance, we examine various ways in which dialogue, dedication, and requests function through words and movement, in different configurations—solo, duet, and trio. What does a request require from the person making it, and what does it require from the recipient? When is it merely a suggestion, when does it become a recommendation, and when does it turn into an order? Is there a perfect response to a specific request? What happens when someone’s request seems ordinary and logical, but the body resists it? How can one negotiate without using words? Does a simple “please” end the negotiation, or does it just begin it?
This play is dedicated to everyone who can’t let go because of their pride and dignity. This play is dedicated to everyone who believes in friendship between men and women. This play is dedicated to you and me.
